Picture connected to Break of Day and The Sun Rising |
As with any person, if you study them enough, patterns start to emerge. The same goes
for the poet John Donne. Donne has a couple of themes that are frequently used in his poems such as death, love, and religion.
Death is a focus of Donne within his poems because at an early childhood he had four of his close family members die by the
time he was ten. This theme can be shown by using the poem Death Be Not Proud. This poem is about how people should not be
afraid of death and that one day we will have victory over death to become alive in the afterlife.
Love is another common theme of Donne’s and shows how much he loves to be with women. This love theme can easily be
shown by the use of the two poems Break of Day and The Sun Rising. In the poem Break of Day Donne asks the question why he
has to leave his woman in bed while he goes off the work and in The Sun Rising he talks of how Love has no season and that
he is having the best day of his life in bed with his woman.
Religion was also talked about a lot within Donne's works. This theme can be seen in his Holy Sonnets poems. In the Holy Sonnets,
God was a commonly used word in some of the poems titles, thus emphasizing his believe in God.
